Problem solving is defined as the thought processes involved in solving a problem. Creative thinking is the ability to create. The two are separate but can also be combined to influence one another. Why should we just solve a problem when we can solve it and also have a little bit of fun in the process? I used to work in the retail industry and often times we would be faced with the challenge on how to get more consumers in our stores and increase the spending that went on. Typical problem solving never really worked out well. We could always just send out flyers or place an ad in the paper telling customers to shop our stores. That was as basic of an idea that most of the store associates came up with. In walks creative thinking! We realized that we had to think creatively and figure out ways to really “wow” the customer. Something so amazing that they would be talking about our store long after their purchases were made and they left our doors. This change of action was actually pretty easy for me to carry out since I have always leaned more towards the creative side of life. I set out to accomplish my goal. The end result involved balloons, food, drinks, games and drawings and many happy and quite excited customers that did indeed return again and again to our store. Figuring out how to make the problem solving process a more creative event doesn’t make it seem all that daunting of a task.

Arousal theory is based around the assumption that people prefer to maintain ideal, or comfortable, levels of arousal, or stimulation. It is keeping the balance of not being “bored” from under stimulation and over stimulation which can cause fear and anxiety. I know that I have experienced the anxiety from over stimulation and it caused me to slow down, take deep breathes and relax to make myself feel more comfortable. Maybe it is because I am a single mom of three energetic children and I work and go to school, both full time, but I can honestly say that I don’t ever get “bored”. When my stimulation level is very low, I tend to roll with it and just do a whole lot of nothing. It is my relaxation point. Often times when I am studying for a test I can get very over stimulated and anxiety or fear can try to take over. Again, I force myself to relax, either by deep breathing or I just walk away from the situation until my nerves are calmed. I experienced the Yerkes-Dodson law the first time I ran my first half-marathon. I got to the race and got in the corrals to begin. I was so overwhelmed that I had fears running through my head. Would I finish? What would my time be? What if I get hurt? I had to calm myself to a lower stimulation level because I was getting worked up and I knew it would affect my concentration for my task. I knew that lower stimulation levels would help to get my focus on track and help me to complete my first official half-marathon.
